Review. "The Neon Demon"
Many films have been shot about the fact that the fashion world is filled not only with beauty, but also with cruelty, and the new film directed by Nicolas Winding Refn "Neon Demon" was no exception.
The premiere of the film in St. Petersburg took place on July 25 at the Lenfilm cinema at a closed press screening. Organizers, Kinoafisha portal.info" was able to turn the atmosphere of the "Neon Demon" into reality – for example, the Noble makeup school, whose staff did makeup for everyone, and Eva modeling agency acted as sponsors of the event. The latter held a small fashion show right in the lobby of the cinema. Even the donuts carefully provided by the company "Ponchkoff" were made in the style of the film.
As for the premiere itself, its great advantage was the excellent camera work – the picture looks perfect, like photos in glossy magazines. The music was also tasteful and complemented the video perfectly. Otherwise, the film is very controversial.
The authors of the picture seemed to want to remove something unusual, catchy and to some extent repulsive, but they fell a little short. Actress Elle Fanning, who played the main role, initially played brilliantly – she managed to create the image of a young and naive girl who found herself in the harsh world of gloss, but in the second half of the film she was rather unconvincing, as the image did not receive proper development. As a result, the scriptwriters' idea is not entirely clear – whether the actress has gone crazy or just turned into a bitch like her fellow models.
As for Keanu Reeves, he can simply be called a "guest star" - his character has not been revealed, why his character is in the picture at all is unclear. It seems as if the authors invited the actor to act only in order to attract the attention of a wide audience to the film. For the same reason, obviously, a beautiful but meaningless scene with a wildcat is inserted into the film.
The film is positioned as a mystical thriller, but it lacks the tension typical of thrillers. Yes, there were moments whose main purpose was to rivet the viewer to the screen with their disgust (for example, the final scene with the eye eating), but unfortunately, most of the time they just looked ridiculous.
The verdict is that yes, this film undoubtedly deserves attention, but first of all it will be interesting to those who care about the picture, not the content. It's like a fashion catalog, you can flip through it for hours, but it doesn't make any sense.
